In China, the raw material of methanol mainly is coal. Chinese methanol producing areas mainly concentrate in South China , East China and North China, and accounting for 27.11% , 23.79% and 16.63% respectively ; among them, Henan , Shaanxi , Shandong , Shanghai , Hebei , Chongqing and Anhui are important producing provinces. With the Newly-Build Methanol Project being put into operation, the proportion of methanol production in the western area will increase dramatically, meanwhile the proportion of methanol production in East China and South China will decrease obviously.

Production of methanol increased greatly and the total production amounted to 7.62 million tons in 2006 in China.
